During 1850-1 Sydney-based English artist Conrad Martens published a series of twenty lithographic prints under the title Sketches in the Environs of Sydney (refer the listing below). One of the works was number #15 entitled Brush Scene, Illawarra (Nettle Tree and Cabbage Palm) . Illustrated above, it was based on an original pencil sketch by Martens (illustrated below) taken on 11 July 1835 during a visit to the Illawarra region, located on the coast approximately 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Sydney. When Conrad Martens arrived in Sydney Harbour in 1835 aboard the Black Warrior from Tahiti via New Zealand, he brought with him the experiences of a professional landscape painter who had spent the previous two years travelling to South America and the Pacific as a member of the crew of the HMS Hyacinth and HMS Beagle , following on a decade of painting in his native England. Martens was then aged 34, and enthusiastic at the thought of bringing his skills to bear upon a landscape which was largely unknown and at that time little seen by European eyes. During his time with the Beagle he had seen all manner of plac
